How to read a sewing pattern

A pattern is a set of flat shapes plus markings. The markings tell you how to cut, line up and sew each piece. A simple skirt is the best place to learn them.

The pieces

Each piece is a flat shape of one part of the garment, such as a skirt front, a skirt back and a waistband. A label tells you the name and how many to cut.

The markings

Seam allowance

The extra fabric between the cutting line and the stitching line. Many patterns use around 1.5 cm, but it varies, so check what your pattern says.

Read the instructions first

Read the whole instruction sheet before you cut. It lists fabric needed, pieces to cut and the order to sew.

Try it in Sewwren: open the printable NO. 01 Basic skirt from the Patterns page and find each marking on it.
