How to measure yourself for sewing

Measure bust, waist and hip, plus the lengths your garment needs. Stand relaxed, keep the tape level and snug, and write every number down.

Why it matters

Your measurements decide which size to cut and where to adjust. Pattern sizes are not the same as shop sizes, so go by measurements.

What to measure

Do it well

Choose your size

Compare your measurements with the pattern's size chart. If bust, waist and hip fall in different sizes, follow the pattern's advice, often cutting the larger size and adjusting.

Try it in Sewwren: the Measurements tool guides you through each step.

Quick check

1. Are pattern sizes the same as shop sizes?
2. Where is the waist measured?
3. Why measure twice?
