How much fabric do you need?

The fabric you need depends on the garment, your size and the fabric width. Work it out before the shop, and add a little extra for mistakes and matching prints.

What changes the amount

Allow extra

Add some for cutting errors, shrinkage if you will pre-wash, and for matching stripes, checks or prints. Directional prints need all pieces facing the same way.

Read the pattern envelope or sheet

Many patterns list fabric by size and width. Use that as a starting point and compare it with your own calculation.

Take a list to the shop

Write down fabric, lining, zips, buttons and thread so nothing is forgotten.

Try it in Sewwren: the Fabric calculator turns your measurements into metres. Try it for NO. 02 Tee or NO. 03 Hoodie.

Quick check
