How to take client measurements properly

Take measurements with the tape snug but not tight, over thin clothing, with the client standing naturally. Write each number down straight away with the date.

Before you start

The key measurements

Tape technique

You should be able to slide one finger under the tape. Keep the tape level all the way round. Measure twice if a number surprises you.

Record it

Write the measurement, the date and what it was for. Bodies change, so check again before each new project.

Clients far away

A client can measure themselves with a helper and send the results to you. A guided tool avoids missing a measurement.

Try it in Sewwren: the Measurements tool walks through eleven guided steps and produces a result you can share.

Quick check

1. How tight should the tape be?
2. What should you record besides the number?
3. A measurement looks surprising. What now?
